Obituary for Sophia Cranshaw
Sophia Cranshaw, of Brooklyn, NY, formerly of Memphis, TN, Emmy award-winning director, writer, producer and documentarian, passed away on Monday, October 24. She was 45. Her work touched many Viacom brands from VH1, to Logo, to MTV Networks, where she served as the Vice President of On-Air Promos. Cranshaw helped launch mtvU, MTV's college network. Born in Memphis, TN, Cranshaw grew up in East Texas. She received a Liberal Arts degree in Radio, Television and Film from the University of North Texas and went on to graduate from the Executive Leadership Development Program at the UCLA Anderson Business School. Cranshaw received the Governor's Award Emmy for mtvU's Campaign for Darfur in 2006. A year later, Cranshaw won a Peabody award for mtvU's "Half of Us" mental health campaign, an ongoing effort to which she dedicated a decade of her career and creativity. Through her work, she collaborated with celebrities such as Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Vanessa Williams, Martha Stewart, Mary J. Blige, Mos Def, and Joel Schumacher. Outside of her work at Viacom, Cranshaw independently directed and produced the 2016 documentary "Hail No!" which explored the intersection of racial discrimination and New York City yellow cab drivers. Cranshaw is survived by her parents Nonah Louise and John A. Cranshaw, sister Pia Mitchell, aunt Ledelle Mitchell, her cousin Tanya Hilliard, and a legacy of family, friends, and colleagues who loved and respected her dearly. Visitation at 11 a.m., with service following at 12:00 noon on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 2634 Carnes Ave., Memphis, TN 38114. Burial in Forest Hill - Midtown Cemetery..
