Sgt. Antonia Monéy Mims, of Hopewell, VA passed away at her home on Sunday, October 24, 2021. Born and raised in Memphis, TN to Willie & Norry Lay on April 12, 1960. Antonia graduated from Frederick Douglass high school in Memphis and attended college at Alcorn State University.

Antonia joined the US Army in 1983 and served proudly for over 25 years. During that time, she was stationed in Germany, and served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Antonia joined the Army Reserves. She then joined the Virginia Army National Guard and served with the 3647 Maintenance Company for 10 years, before retiring in 2020. During more than 30 years of service to her country Antonia received numerous medals and honors including the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal bronze star, and the Global War on Terrorism medal.

Being a mother was the joy of her life. She gave birth to sons Terry Lee Richards on July 12, 1981 and Jerald “Jaye” Mims Jr. on May 30,1989. Antonia loved her boys with her entire being. They were her life, and the accomplishment she was most proud of.

She went by many names. Antonia, Monia, Monéy, Mims… no matter how you knew her, she didn’t hold back on letting you know the truth. She never liked to be the one out front or on stage, and she hated being in pictures. Monéy had an infectious laugh that made you laugh right along with her. She was honest and would tell you the truth even when you didn’t want to hear it. She was the type of person who would give you her very last, even if it meant she had to go without. Monéy loved big and fought hard. She was the person you wanted on your team but didn’t want as an enemy. Her military family knew this all too well. Her time in battle left its scars and challenged her, but never took away her spirit. She loved the men & women she worked and served with. She absolutely considered them family.

Antonia was a solider, battle buddy, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to countless people who may never meet each other, but we will all miss her dearly. Antonia Monéy Mims was loved.

Antonia Monéy Mims is survived by her children Terry Lee (Zita) Richards and Jerald “Jaye” Mims Jr. Grandchildren T-Essence Monéy Richards-Foster, Terrius Lee Richards, and Ne’kiah Richards. Great grandchildren Ni’Juan Daniel Sublett and Ni’Jaie Rose Sublett. Her siblings Janice Jones, Memphis, TN; Reginald Richard, Memphis, TN; Carla (Michael) Housley, Houston, TX. Her sister-in-law Calvaretta Smith, Cordova, TN.
