Obituary for Robert Lee Johnson, Sr.
Mr. Robert Lee Johnson, Sr. was born March 17, 1939 in Yazoo County, Mississippi. He was the sixth child of twelve children born to the union of both the late General Grant Johnson, Sr. and Eliza Luse Johnson. As a child, he confessed his love for Christ and was baptized under the leadership of Rev. J. H. Johnson at Galilee M.B. Church in Benton, Mississippi. Robert was educated through the Yazoo County school systems and graduated from Linwood High School in 1959. Growing up in Mississippi, he became well known and respected by his family and friends. Robert was a hard worker, but yet a simple man with much wisdom to share. In 1961, he moved to Memphis, Tennessee to establish a better life for himself. He joined Pearly Gates M. B. Church under the leadership of Rev. W. C. Jackson and he married a childhood friend from home, Earnestine Jones Johnson in 1965. To this union, three children were born: Carol, Calvin and Robert, Jr.
In the 1980s, Robert became a member of Monumental Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Samuel Billy Kyles. He was a member of the March Club and the Sanctuary Usher Board where he once served as President. He was a manager at Buckman Laboratories, Inc. for 35 years. His spirit flew away home on July 6, 2016 at Methodist University Hospital surrounded by his family. His memories will be cherished by six children: Bobby Joe Batton of Las Vegas, NV, Barnette Johnson of Yazoo City, MS, Floria B. Sandlin (Andre) of Memphis, TN, Carol R. Johnson of Memphis, TN, Calvin G. Johnson (L’Anda) of Atlanta, GA, and Robert L. Johnson, Jr. of Memphis, TN; three sisters, Janie Clifton, Chicago, IL, Florence Claiborne, Memphis, TN, Hazel Scott, Jackson, MS and one brother, Jester Johnson (Valerie), Jackson, MS, 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren (one preceded him in death); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
