Obituary for Robert Johnson Jr.
Robert Johnson Jr., age 70, died July 15, 2020.

Mr. Robert Johnson Jr. was born February 15, 1950 to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sr. and Lillie Bell Johnson in Belzoni, MS. He and the family moved to Memphis Tennessee where he graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1968. Being the highly intelligent individual he was, Robert continued his education at The Tennessee State University in Nashville Tennessee, where he graduated with Honors, receiving his Bachelors and Master’s degree in Political Science. During his matriculation, he joined the brotherhood of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. It was also there that he met the love of his life, Mrs. Phyllis Shaw-Johnson. The two were reunited after returning home to Memphis and later married in August of 1988. Robert worked for Genesco Shoe Company in Nashville for many years before returning home and settling into his professional career with Life of Georgia Insurance Company for whom he worked for over 20 years. Though tall in stature, Robert was truly a gentle soul and a genuinely kind individual. He absolutely loved all people, especially his family and his church family. Although he had no children of his own, you could always find him sharing knowledge and giving counsel to his nieces, nephews, and the children of his community. He was a strong advocate for education, and even worked for many years as Director of Geeter Park Daycare Center. Robert was an avid reader and very well versed in world affairs, but he found no greater joy in any other pastime than gardening. Robert put his love into action as he was often found giving of his harvest to those in his neighborhood who were less fortunate and even offering many a place to stay. As a lifelong member of Geeter Park Baptist Church, Robert faithfully served his congregation until his health declined, serving in many capacities from deacon to grounds keeper. No job was too high or too low, for he was truly a humble man who simply loved serving others. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, for to know him was truly to love him. Robert Johnson Jr. peacefully transitioned from this life on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 after 70 precious years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Sr. and Lillie Bell Johnson; his wife, Phyllis Shaw-Johnson; and one sister, Linda Sue White. He leaves to cherish his memory four sisters, Arnetta Jackson, JoAnn (Terry) McMillian, Annie Bell Currence, and Rosalind Givens, all of Memphis, TN; and one brother, Calvin (Sandra) Johnson, of Memphis, TN.
