Obituary for Rebecca Poston Jeter
I will lift mine eyes to the hills from whence cometh my help; my help cometh from the Lord who made heaven and earth. Psalms 121

Rebecca Poston Jeter quietly answered Gods call and transitioned to her heavenly home on Monday, October 3, 2016 at Methodist University Hospital. Rebecca, the younger daughter of William Cullen and Alice Winston Poston was born on January 7, 1920 in Maury City, Tennessee. Her sister, Willette Poston Bowling preceded her in death.

The family moved to Jackson, TN where she attended North Jackson Elementary School and Merry High School. Her quest for academic success prompted her to graduate magna cum laude from Lane College in 1943. In 2013 she proudly walked across the stage at the Lane College Commencement to receive recognition as a 70 year graduate of the college. She completed advanced courses at Northwestern University and the YWCA School for Professional Workers in Lake Forest, Illinois. Professionally she was an elementary teacher for several years in the Chattanooga, TN and San Bernardino, CA school systems. She also was a Director of the YWCA in San Bernardino and Lexington, KY.

During her early years she joined St. Paul C.M.E. Church in Jackson, TN where she was nurtured with Christian values. In 1973 she united with Mt. Pisgah C.M.E. Church where she served faithfully as a member of the Isaac Lane Missionary Circle, Higher Education Ministry, Wednesday morning Bible Study, and Sunday School Class #2.

Mrs. Jeter was active in several organizations. She was a life member of her beloved sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho, Incorporated. She often spoke of her love for her sorority sisters. She was also a member of the Lane College Alumni Association and the Westlawn-Galveston Block Club.

She was married to the late Colonel Philip Jeter, Jr. for 52 years and to this union one daughter, Philette was born. She was proud to be a military wife and devoted mother.

Mrs. Jeter maintained her independence and remained active during her golden years. She read the newspaper and watched the news daily to keep abreast of current events. She especially enjoyed attending meetings of the church and sorority. Following her accident and hip replacement, the doctors’ prognosis was that she would not walk again, however with her determined spirit she was able to walk around the house with a walker. But God! When asked about her secret to longevity she said she didn’t really have a secret, but each morning upon rising she would thank God for one more day.

As the last surviving person of her generation in the family she was lovingly referred to as the Matriarch of the Winston-McDonald family. When God saw that she was getting tired, He gently called her home and said, “Come unto me and rest.”

She leaves to cherish her memories a devoted daughter, Philette Jeter Greene (Benjamin), a nephew, Rufus Bowling, Jr. of Alta Loma, California, sisters-in-law, Vera Wiggins (Ernest) of Salisbury, NC, Rosa Jeter of Washington, DC, Rachel Thomas (Neville) of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Margaret Jeter of Los Angeles, CA, Rubye Jeter of New York and one brother-in-law, Thomas Jeter of Salisbury, NC. She also leaves beloved cousins, friends and a dear soror/daughter, Ms. Gwen Harper.
