Obituary for Marie Johnson
Marie Johnson, 100, died April 23, 2018.
Mrs. Marie Edmonson Combest Johnson “Mama Pie”, was born August 28, 1917, in Pachuta, Mississippi to the late William Edmonson and Fannie McDonald Edmonson. She was the second of seven children. She grew up, married, raised her children, attended school, and attended Mt. Hebron and Chapel Hill Missionary Baptist Churches in Pachuta, a place she loved until the day she passed, on April 23, 2018.

She was a loving mother, daughter, aunt, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved to quilt and she made quilts for many family members. She often stated that she started working at the age of twelve and worked non-stop until she retired. She was a great cook and enjoyed cooking for family, church functions, special occasions and the children and faculty members who attended Quitman Upper Elementary School, where she worked. She particularly enjoyed her attendance in cooking classes at Jackson State University.

Mrs. Johnson’s first priority was her family. She was the primary caregiver to her parents and after becoming a mother, her goal in life was to send all her children to college. Somehow, she accomplished that goal and then some. They all earned Bachelors degrees, two earned a Master’s degree and one went on to earn a Doctorate of Juris Prudence.

She professed her faith and accepted Christ at an early age. She was baptized at Mt. Hebron Baptist Church in Pachuta, MS and after marrying Tommy Combest she transferred her membership to the Chapel Hill Missionary Baptist Church, his family church, where she remained a faithful member until she was eight-six years of age. At eighty-six, she moved to Cordova, TN to live with her daughters, where she attended the Hope Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Staff Sergeant Harry L. Square; two sisters, Florence and Maudell. She leaves to cherish her most precious moments her daughters, Joyce Combest Price, Esq. (James) of Cordova, TN, Tommy Faye Campbell , and Carolyn A. Combest, all of Cordova TN. She also leaves eight grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews to mourn her passing.

Serenity Funeral Home, Tel. (901)379-0861.
