Lawrence Keith “Big Smuuve” Ashford, Sr. was born on January 31, 1966 to the late Ruth and Clyde Ashford, Sr. Keith accepted Christ into his life at an early age and was baptized at Shiloh Baptist Church.
Keith graduated Southside High School in 1984 and was an outstanding football player who was scouted by numerous colleges. He married Marshell Brown-Ashford in 1996 and to this union, two children were born—Ebony Ashford King and Lawrence Ashford, Jr. His children and grand-children were truly the light of his life. You would often hear him bragging about their accomplishments and showing off their pictures. He was a proud Dad and proud Paw-Paw!
Keith was also a highly skilled, certified mechanic who began his career at the family business. He went on to work for Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep for many years. He eventually set up shop at his home and was often referred to as the “one mechanic everyone could trust.” He worked on cars until his illness prevented him from working any longer. Even after he fell ill, people were still able to call him for mechanical advice and he could easily diagnose ANY car over the phone. He was truly one of a kind!
He is survived by his wife, Marshell, one daughter, Ebony (Marshall), one son, Lawrence “K.J.”, two grand-daughters, Madyson and Layla, and two sisters, Iler Denise Ashford and Tammie Yolanda Ashford-Gray. He leaves to cherish his memory a host of in-laws, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, friends, and a very special friend, Cynthia Floyd. Preceding him in death are mother, Ruth, father, Clyde Sr., sisters, Sandra and Donna, and brother, Clyde Jr.
“I have fought the good fight; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”- 2 Timothy 4: 7-8
