Obituary for Kenneth Wharton
Kenneth Wharton, 73, died December 5, 2019.
Dr. Kenneth Wharton was born in 1946 in Lebanon Tennessee to Mr. and Mrs. A C Wharton and attended the local schools, graduating from the Wilson County Training school. Kenneth was a graduate of Tennessee State University and went on to pursue a career in Medicine as a graduate of Howard University Medical School. He Interned and did Residency at Cook County Hospital. Other Hospital affiliations were South Chicago Community Hospital and Jackson Park Hospital. From 1977 to1979 he served with the U.S. Department of Public Health at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. Georgia. For decades Dr. Wharton maintained a private practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology in his beloved Chicago.
Ken, as he was fondly called by family and close friends, was a generous supporter of higher education. He quietly provided financial assistance to students pursuing higher education and gave generously to the Wharton Scholarship at Cumberland University.
His hobbies consisted of watching football (the Bears), listening to smooth jazz and challenging technology. He was an avid reader as evidenced by his large collection of books and novels. The family viewed him as the consummate medic as he always appeared when a member was having surgery. Family members could call him for the daily news as he read the Memphis and Lebanon Newspapers with his morning cup of coffee on one of his computers.
Doctor Wharton was preceded in death by his parents and sister Velma Lowe. He leaves to mourn his passing, sisters Mary Wharton Davis, Ruth Wharton and one brother, Attorney and former Memphis Mayor AC Wharton (Ruby). He was especially fond of his 12 nephews and nieces.
