Joseph Louis Owens Sr. was born March 9, 1942 in Memphis TN to Mattie and Henry Owens. Joseph became a Christian as a young man and rededicated his life in his later years. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mattie and Henry Owens two brothers: Norris and Albert Owens.
Joseph attended Carver High school and there after received his diploma. He worked in the retail grocery food industry for many years. As a young man, in the early 1960’s, prior to Martin L. King assassination, Ebony magazine wrote an article, Joseph was a featured story as the first black assistance store manager to work for the Atlanta Pacific Company known as the {A&P} food chain stores. He received various awards and business accolades. Joseph retired from the retail business in 2010. His legacy has inspired many. As a businessman and entrepreneur, he owned and operated -Joe’s Parking Lot-Striping business as well.
Joseph leaves to cherish his memories, his wife Ada M. Owens, children; Senetta (Richard) Conner, Alfred, Joseph L., II and Juliet (Reginald) Alexander, Dianna (Harry) Sullivan of Texas, Vickley Fountain and Paulette Givands of Texas, thirteen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren. One brother: Larry Owens and two sisters: Mary Webster and Earline Blakely, sister in-law; Elizabeth Miller, Lillie M. Ross, Lena Prather, and Beverly Tate Franklin; all of Memphis, Josephine Durham of Jacksonville Florida and Mary Louise Tate of Detroit Michigan and a host of nieces and nephews.
