Jewel D. Huntspon Hayes, 81, died November 29, 2018.
Jewel Dean Jones Huntspon Hayes 81, passed away Thursday, November 29, 2018 at Baptist Memorial Hospital. She was born in Jackson- Madison County, TN to Hunter Jones, Sr. and Veola Cathey Jones on November 29, 1937. Her siblings, LouDella, James and Hunter, Jr preceded her in death.
Jewel accepted Christ at an early age and joined Zion Hill Baptist Church, Beech Bluff, TN where her parents were founding members. After moving to Memphis she united with Mt. Moriah under the leadership of Rev. R.W. Norsworthy where she served faithfully and energetically as Chairman of the Trustee Board and Sunday School Teacher until her health failed.
She was married to the late Christopher “Ezell” Huntspon, Jr and to this union one daughter, Paula was born. Jewel is the widow of Bobby Hayes who preceded her in death on May 18, 2016. She was an honor graduate of the Merry High School Class of 1956, Jackson, TN. She attended Tennessee State University and received her Bachelor of
Science Degree from Lane College, Jackson, TN. Jewel earned her Master’s+ 45 degree from Memphis State University.
She was employed by the Memphis City Schools System for 29 years. She taught at T.W. Patterson, Douglass and Kingsbury High Schools. She also served as an Adjunct Professor at State Tech. One of her many special interests was cooking and baking (she was a chef “par excellence”). She also loved flowers and always maintained a beautiful manicured lawn.
She is survived by her daughter Rev. Paula Huntspon, step-daughter Bobbie Ann (Tyrone) Hayes; godchildren, Rosalind Tunstall, Cynthia Baskerville and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins other family and friends.
