Gregory Bernard Sims (“maleman”) was born March 10, 1954 in Memphis, TN to the late Marie Mitchum Sims and Benjamin Harrison Sims II. A proud graduate of Melrose High School, he was reared in the historic Orange Mound community. He had a love for music and especially the bass guitar. One of his fondest memories was playing in the high school band. A homebody, shade tree mechanic and overall jack of all trades, you could find him tinkering under the hood of a car, working on house projects or just moseying around his shop on any given weekend. He was also a pet lover and enjoyed a ride or two back in the day on his motorcycle. He was no stranger in the neighborhood partly due to his mastery of the art of porch sitting on the weekends. An avid sports watcher, he stayed up on the latest stats with the Patriots and the Titans.

After retiring from a long career as a truck driver with Hardin’s-Sysco, his health challenges couldn’t keep him still. He invested in lawn equipment and maintained a humble lawncare business. A “cool cat”, you could find him sporting his shades even indoors. He had a million-watt smile and perhaps smiled the biggest when he was with his mother and siblings at family gatherings. In his last years, he spent his days being cared for and comforted by his beloved sister Barbara. He transitioned from this life to rest on May 28, 2021.
Preceding him in death are his parents, his eldest brother, Benjamin Sims, III, and his eldest sister, Charlotte Osborn.

He leaves to cherish his memories his daughters Charita Robinson (Dale), Cecily Sims Freeman, and Chastity Sims; two grandchildren, Robert Gregory and Robyn Marie; his sisters, Barbara Sims Taylor and Rosalyn Jackson (David); his brother Rodney Sims; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
