Obituaries
Flora, the daughter of Ethel Lockett and Bradford Benham, Jr., was born in Memphis Tennessee. On December 3, 1951 her life's journey began and ended January 21, 2017, at Baptist Memorial Hospital. At the age of 13, Flora committed her life to Christ and was baptized by Dr. William Herbert Brewster at East Trigg Avenue Baptist Church. Shortly after, she began as an announcer for a live Sunday night church broadcast on WDIA. In 1988, she became a charter member of the Liberty's Mass Church under the leadership of Pastor Bradford Benham, III. She was known for the eloquence, clarity and power of her voice and speaking abilities.
As a young mother, Flora worked tirelessly to provide for her two children, Thomas and Vonda, whom she selflessly made sacrifices for throughout her years. She took pride in their maturity and achievements. Flora's conversations were of joy when speaking of her love and affection for her two grandsons and daughter-in-law.
Flora began her career in 1975 in the medical records department of Methodist Central Hospital, dedicating her knowledge and skills in the area of health information management. As she continued to study in HIM, gaining several medical credentials, she became known by her peers to be one of the top experts in the business. Venturing out as an entrepreneur to establish her own business in HIM, she provided healthcare coding for numerous hospitals and healthcare organizations throughout the region. Adding to her accomplishments, Flora went on to become a published author which was one of her dreams fulfilled.
To cherish her memories, she leaves a son, Thomas Perry, Jr. (Kimberly); a daughter, Vonda Perry; two grandchildren, Chad Jason West II, and Thomas Perry, III; sisters, Joyce Hawkins (Garland), Shirley Peggs (James), Janice Rayner (Michael); a brother, Reverend Bradford Benham, III (Denise); along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends whom she loved dearly.
Memorial services at 12 noon on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Serenity Funeral Home, 1638 Sycamore View Road.
