Dr. Charles H Brown, MD exemplified a life of service and care for others as well as an unbreakable commitment to his family, friends and community.
Dr. Brown was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on June 25, 1945, to the Warren and Altha Brown. Both parents preceded him in death. He was the youngest of three sons and accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age and was baptized at Greenwood CME Church.
Charles, with his brothers, the late William Lee and Warren Jr., attended Douglas High School in Memphis, Tennessee. At Douglas he was a multi-sport varsity athlete and was president of both the Student Council and National Honor Society.
Following his graduation from Douglas High School, Charles attended Memphis State University where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry, followed by a Masters Degree in Biology/Science Education and also a doctorate in education administration. As an undergraduate student Charles was a founding charter member of the Delta Nu Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma.
During this period of his life, he served his community in a variety of roles, including teaching and coaching positions in the Memphis City School System as well as administrative positions at Memphis State University. It was also during this time at Memphis State that he met the love of his life, Neely Hurd. Charles and Neely married on November 4, 1974 and to this union, two beautiful children, Charles Jr., and Cynthia Elaine, were born.
Charles began his medical training at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences (UTCHS) and received an MD degree in 1977. Dr. Brown then completed a Family Practice Residency in 1979 at St. Joseph Hospital East (St. Francis Hospital) and the University of Tennessee. Dr. Brown received certification as a Diplomate by the American Academy of Family Practice.
Dr. Brown practiced medicine at his private medical practice, Memphis Family Practice Specialty, P.C., at St. Joseph Hospital, Delta Medical Center and St. Francis Hospital for 39 years. He also was a clinical instructor at UTCHS where he trained residents in Family Practice. In his private medical practice, work with the Memphis City School System, Juvenile Court System, U.S. Military, Crittenden County Jail as well as the Memphis Federal Corrections Institute (medical consultant) and various areas of community involvement, Dr. Brown has served thousands of Memphians and people throughout the Mid-South.
Charles is a retired member of the U.S. Army Reserve, and in 1990 and 1991 was stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in support of Operation Desert Storm. He continued his support for the military after retirement as an Armed Forces Entrance Examiner where he evaluated recruits for fitness for the Armed Services.
Charles gave his time, talents, service and sacrifice to numerous health, church, educational and community boards.
Past and present professional memberships include: American Medical Association, Bluff City Medical Society, National Medical Association, Volunteer State Medical Society, Memphis and Shelby County Medical Society, Tennessee Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, Association of Black Cardiologists, International Society of Hypertension in Blacks (ISHIB), MSTA, MEA, and APGA. Dr. Brown also served on the Board of Trustees at Memphis State University for 15 years where he funded the Jerry Boone annual scholarship for a deserving student.
On February 8, 2019, Charles made his transition at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Neely Elaine, son Charles Jr., (Raagnee) of Washington, D.C., daughter, Dr. Cynthia Brown, brother, Warren, Jr. (Peggy), of Las Vegas, Nevada, one aunt, Mrs. Odessa Conley of Memphis, Sisters-in-law Geraldine Payne of Chicago, Illinois, Jacqueline Davis (Aaron), brother-in-law Robert Hurd, Jr., of Memphis, and two grandchildren Salma and Saleena Brown of Washington, D.C. He also leaves an abundance of loving and caring cousins, nieces, nephews, very dear friends, and colleagues who were a special blessing to his life.
