Obituary for Dina Upton
Dina Jane Winslow Upton, 77, died Monday, April 25 at Harbor View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Memphis, after a long illness.

Ms. Upton was born on November 23, 1938 in Newbern, Tennessee, in the front bedroom of the family home on Tyler St.—the same room where her grandmother would pass away thirty years later. She was the elder of two children.

She graduated from Newbern High School in 1956, and attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, earning a bachelor’s degree in history in 1960.

That same year she moved to Memphis, where she worked at Baptist Memorial Hospital as a cytotechnologist for 37 years. She was an avid gardener, gifted amateur photographer, enthusiastic rockhound, and a long-time supporter of and contributor to the Seed Saver Exchange. Dina loved taking long walks around Midtown Memphis, her home for fifty years. And she was a lifelong passionate reader.

Ms. Upton was a member of the Shelby County Democratic Women’s Club, and was active in numerous political campaigns. After her retirement, she ran a field office for the Al Gore presidential campaign full-time. She was particularly successful at knocking on doors and persuading people to take yard signs.

She is survived by two children, daughter Donna Upton (David Dorbin), South Orange, NJ; son David, Memphis; grandson Samuel Winslow Dorbin; brother John Holloway (Wylie, TX); honorary niece Teesha Walker; her current and former neighbors and dear friends on Lee Place, where she lived for more than 20 years; and her loving, heroic, and skilled caretakers Mary Wilson and Teresa Stewart.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by Donald Upton, her former spouse and father of her children; her dearest friend, Dreda Collins; and her beloved kitty, Balls.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 4:30 pm, Saturday, April 30 at Serenity Place, 1648 Sycamore View Road, Memphis, with a reception to follow. Flowers are welcome; memorial donations may be sent to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
